As I’m sure some of you are aware, we have sadly been told that the legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has passed away at the age of 85. The House of Chanel confirmed that he had passed away in Paris.
He was born Karl Otto Lagerfeldt in 1933 in Germany, but Lagerfeld changed his original surname from Lagerfeldt, because he believed it sounded ‘more commercial’.
He emigrated to Paris as a young teenager, and became a design assistant for Pierre Balmain, before moving on and working at Fendi and Chloe in the 1960s.
He had been the Creative Director of Chanel since 1983. He created collections for Chanel, Fendi and his signature label, this is just to name a few. His career has spanned an impressive seven decades, with him becoming the life and soul of the French Fashion House a decade after Coco Chanel passed.
The Chanel shows have always been very theatrical under Lagerfeld’s leadership and something that we associate when we think of Karl, but besides his extravagant collections and shows, he was also known for his signature look. This consisted of a black suit, fingerless gloves, big black sunglasses and his hair swept back into a low ponytail.
I am intrigued to see what will happen for the House of Chanel and whether Virginie Viard, director of the creative studio of the House of Chanel, will live up to everyone’s expectations.
